The City of Fort Collins has adopted a goal of zero waste by 2030, with interim goals of 75% waste diversion by 2020 and 90% by 2025. A second, complementary goal is to achieve a per capita goal of 2.8 pounds of trash per person by 2025.
The City of Fort Collins regulates trash haulers operating in the City; to be licensed companies must apply Pay-As-You-Throw rates whereby single-family residential trash is charged by volume and recycling is included for no additional charge. The City has also passed bans on the disposal of electronics and cardboard in the waste stream.
The City provides a recycling drop-off center at 1702 Riverside Ave. The City's Waste Reduction and Recycling Assistance Program (WRAP) helps businesses and apartment complexes start or improve recycling programs. Fort Collins also provides extensive education and outreach for the community about recycling/composting
and zero waste.
