The mission of Yampa Valley Sustainability Council is to be a resource and catalyst for building a sustainable community. Our organization is like the hub of a wheel, connecting with, engaging and supporting businesses, schools, individuals, local governments and events in the effort to conserve resources and reduce our community’s carbon footprint. The ultimate outcome that YVSC strives for is more sustainable behaviors by all residents and visitors, resulting in a smaller collective carbon footprint for the entire community. We do this through a broad-reaching array of programs and services: Our Waste Diversion program encompasses Sustainable Events, Recycling and new Food Waste initiatives, which are reducing household food waste and rescuing surplus food from restaurants. Through our Sustainable Schools program, we are creating a culture of sustainability in schools through waste diversion, energy efficiency and tree-planting projects. Talking Green is an adult education series on various sustainability-related topics. The Green Building program educates the building community and residents about building and remodeling sustainably. The Energy program encourages energy conservation and renewable energy. And, ReTree Steamboat connects the local community, especially youth, to their forest and environment.
